Pasadena Chalk Festival 2010

I took these photos at the Pasadena Chalk Festival in 2010. All these artworks were done in pastels which I absolutely love working with. These are among my favorite images that I took at the festival.

Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol’s art is very popular these days. Most of his artwork derives from pop culture which is widely praised among today youth. However, I find his artwork very repetitive and dull.  His work is based manufacturability, destroying one of the key aspects to great artworks, originality.  One of the reasons I believe that most people find his artwork so pleasing is because of his color selections in the artwork.  Notice that he tends to use a lot of complementary colors which is very pleasing to the human eyes. The use of color intermesh with today’s pop culture icons will appeal to people more than other artworks.

Banksy

I know I’ve already blogged about him, but I really like this piece.  It’s a voice calling out for a new structure in our society, that the status quo is not acceptable.  We need reform!

Michael Kirby

Another artist I recently found is Michael Kirby, he is a street painter. His work often depicts an arial view of different subjects on the pavement. His work can also be found on walls of historic buildings.

Alfonso Ossorio

When I walked into LACMA in Los Angeles, this was the most shockly memorable artwork I'd ever seen.  I absolutely love this piece and its symbloic meaning, that one day humans will enter the period of extinction like so many other animals in the world.

Homework from another class

Working with positive and negative space to create an illusionary picture. I used leaves from my backyard to as a stencil. Sorry I couldn't turn off the light on my camera. Please comment!

Countries bombed by the US since 1950-2011

This is one of my experimental artworks that is in progress. Please tell me what you think?

El Chivo

Another street artist I found is El Chivo, I found this particular piece very interesting in that we often forget about the past. This reminded me of one of Bruce Mau's Incomplete Manifesto for Growth:

42. Remember.Growth is only possible as a product of history. Without memory, innovation is merely novelty. History gives growth a direction. But a memory is never perfect. Every memory is a degraded or composite image of a previous moment or event. That’s what makes us aware of its quality as a past and not a present. It means that every memory is new, a partial construct different from its source, and, as such, a potential for growth itself.

Bruce Mau's Incomplete Manifesto for Growth

40. Avoid fields.
Jump fences. Disciplinary boundaries and regulatory regimes are attempts to control the wilding of creative life. They are often understandable efforts to order what are manifold, complex, evolutionary processes. Our job is to jump the fences and cross the fields.

A prof. gave me a scenario today of what would I do in this situation. Lets say I was to holding an art galley that had pictures of erotic materials. Some pictures were posted on the gallery windows. A congress woman walks by and is utterly offended, she calls up her "friends" to have the art show shut down. What would you do in that situation? I said call up city hall and protest. People are always going to be offended and try to take you down. You got to be able to fight back, because if you don't protect your art, nobody will. If you really believe in free speech, you better defend it!

Invader

Another street artist I found interesting is "Invader". Inspired by the game Space Invaders he decided to recreate the characters using small colored tiles to forms mosaics. He also incorporates some popular video game characters known for having a pixel like image similar to space invader. His artwork can be found all around the world, check out his website: http://www.space-invaders.com/
